In IT, the English term "Software Release" refers to the authorization and publication of an updated software. Because these releases encompass new features and improvements, in common parlance, they are often referred to as "Software Updates."
In everyday life, we often come into contact with new software versions through the continuous use of apps for tablets and smartphones, often without even realizing it. But why are these releases also significant for modern industrial robots?
In the field of industrial robotics, the significance of software releases has been transferred with the development of easy-to-use, networked, and cost-effective Digital Robots. How do users get access to the latest Digital Robot software? You probably recall: Until the 2010s, new software versions had to be distributed first on CD-ROM, later on DVD. Those times are over!
Of course, you obtain updates for your smartphone or tablet through the respective app stores. In the future, manufacturers of Digital Robots will also make use of the benefits of the Internet of Things (IoT): In addition to having the new, enhanced, and improved software installed by the robot manufacturer's system technicians, industrial companies will be able to quickly and easily download it via the Industrial IoT.
"Robots are much more than just hardware. A significant portion of the value is created through the software, making robots an essential element of digitization and ultimately transforming our robots into Digital Robots."
Jens Riegger, CEO and Co-Founder of fruitcore robotics
In the era of digital automation, robot-based automation entails more than just offering a powerful industrial robot.
Especially when entering the field of robotics, many companies value user-friendly operation that can be flexibly adapted to as many applications as possible.
That's why, with Digital Robots, development teams work behind the scenes to continuously improve the software and provide regular updates. At the same time, developers benefit from the feedback of the experts who work with the robot on a daily basis.
A software release may include minor updates or performance improvements. However, with each subsequent version, there are usually significant innovations available, such as changes in the user interface or entirely new functions that were not previously possible. You can stay informed about the release of a new software version through the manufacturer's newsletters.
A user-friendly, easy-to-use software is what transforms an industrial robot into a Digital Robot. Accordingly, software development aims to tailor the robot to specific needs. Gradually, this allows for the expansion of the range of possible applications based on new ideas from the internal development department, input from external experts, and customer feedback.
"Digital Robots are not limited to a few specialized applications; through the software, they can be configured for a wide variety of scenarios. We continuously work to provide our customers with updates that offer even more possibilities to seamlessly integrate Digital Robots into their workflows."
Jens Riegger, CEO and Co-Founder of fruitcore robotics
No matter how good a release is, it won't make a difference if those who work with the software daily can't comprehend the new features or improvements. Or, worst-case scenario, if they don't even hear about them. The key factor in software for Digital Robots is transparency. Firstly, this applies to providing comprehensible and detailed information about the contents of a release - and announcing it immediately after rolling out the latest version!
Equally important on the path to automation is transparency in costs. Which provider would you consider more trustworthy? The one who promises you a multitude of options but conceals hidden subscription costs? Or, alternatively, the one who leaves you working with outdated software indefinitely?
Or the provider who, before purchase, clearly and openly tells you which software solution makes sense for your application? And who, during the period of your chosen package, naturally keeps you supplied with new features and improvements? We believe the answer is obvious - what do you think?
Would you like to see the user experience for yourself when using our intuitive horstFX software? No problem: we offer you the opportunity to test the operating software free of charge. Take a look at the numerous features and ready-made programs to get your automation up and running quickly and easily!
