The jointed-arm robot is also known as an articulated robot and is the most frequently used all-purpose robot for industrial applications. It is equipped with three rotatory main axes, i.e. serial RRR kinematics, and can therefore be moved in three dimensions. In almost all cases, the first rotational axis is an aligning axis that allows the first arm and the robot base to rotate. The other arms are each connected to the joints of the upstream articulated arm (see figure). The robot can therefore perform similar movements to those of a human arm.
The articulated arms allow the jointed-arm robot to work in an almost spherical segment-shaped workspace. This refers to the space that is accessible from the tool interface with the entirety of all axis movements. Given that these robots can move all their joints simultaneously, they are able to perform very complex sequences of movement. These systems can therefore be used for assembly and handling tasks and are used in almost all sectors.
The jointed-arm robot is probably the most common robot model. One of the reasons for this is that the jointed-arm robot is suitable for any conceivable task in the area of automation. The most frequent tasks include:
A jointed-arm robot system is comprised of far more components than just the robot itself. Accordingly, you should not focus solely on the jointed-arm robot when purchasing your robot. Each component must be selected in accordance with the requirements for the application you wish to automate, adjusted if necessary, and implemented. In addition to components that are developed for special applications, such as effectors, there are a large number of general components. These include feeding systems, clamping systems, sensors, measuring devices, and safety-relevant components. These elements must also be taken into account when purchasing a robot system. In addition, the technical feasibility and existing standards and circumstances must be considered.

Today, the future of every enterprise lies in automation. This is precisely why we developed our robot system HORST. Jointed-arm robot HORST can be assembled, set up, and programmed in a very short time. Processes can be implemented in less than an hour with our specially developed software horstFX, no specialized knowledge required. The integrated safety control horstCONTROL, in combination with the software horstFX, offers everything you need for quick and easy automation.
With its intuitive programming and unique cost–benefit ratio, HORST is your reliable partner for a simple and affordable introduction to automation. Robot-based automation with a jointed-arm robot allows you to be economically efficient and flexible in production. At the same time, HORST can be changed over quickly and efficiently, which gives you the possibility to easily prepare for variant production with small batch sizes.
Jointed-arm robots are the most common robots in the industrial environment. There is a reason for that: After all, jointed-arm robots, and our jointed-arm robot HORST in particular, offer a variety of advantages:
What is more, our jointed-arm robot HORST features an impressive and unbeatable cost–benefit ratio. Among our three models, HORST600, HORST900, and HORST1400, there is a suitable model for every application.
The costs of purchasing a jointed-arm robot depend on which process you want to automate in your company. The cost package for a jointed-arm robot is made up of multiple components. First, there are the costs of the jointed-arm robot itself, then there are the costs for additional add-on parts such as sensors, safety barriers, control units, as well as grippers, suction cups, or other tools, which are known as peripherals. These elements of a robot system often make up a significant part of the total costs. Further factors in the costs area include what is known as system engineering: This refers to programming and installation, for example, as well as project management, commissioning, operation, servicing, and maintenance.
With regard to costs, our jointed-arm robot HORST differs considerably from other systems. Its innovative kinematics and the resulting drive concept as well as the special production technology allow us to keep the acquisition costs comparatively low. As we also place high quality demands on ourselves, we produce our jointed-arm robot HORST on site in Constance on Lake Constance.
Furthermore, HORST does not consume much energy during operation and shows comparatively minor signs of wear. In addition, the easy programming allows you to save time and thus money.
The amount of maintenance a jointed-arm robot requires depends on the type, duration, and frequency of servicing measures performed. These include maintenance, inspection, and servicing. The manner and frequency with which these servicing measures are carried out affect the eventuality of an unexpected failure.
The costs of the servicing measures vary strongly depending on the provider. Thanks to its innovative design, our jointed-arm system HORST’s comparatively low servicing costs are impressive. For example, support arms 1, 2, and 3 can be replaced in a few minutes and all components of our robot system are easily accessible and very easy to maintain.
Due to the fact that automation technology is developing at great speed, the area of application for jointed-arm robots is increasing. Equipped with highly developed software and needs-oriented sensors, robots are used increasingly for complex and sophisticated industrial production and manufacturing tasks. As a result, the demand for specialists who can program and operate robots is growing. Our robot system HORST allows you to avoid this problem. HORST is operated via a 13.3-inch touchscreen and the horstFX software. Using the graphical user interface, users can set up and program the robot intuitively and with ease in just a few minutes. No specialized knowledge required! Our software also makes actuating external machines via common industry interfaces a straightforward task. Our robot system HORST allows users to create complex applications even with little expertise and is therefore not only affordable but really worth its price.
